Across an expansive bus parking lot, Heritage High School in Wake Forest, NC has a baseball and softball field that stare at each other across a drive. It is a relatively short walk across the bus parking lot to the school if someone has to use the restroom facilities, but the school is locked up tight after normal school hours. To remedy that situation, a single portable toilet had been located on the premises since the school first opened in 2012. Neither field had a permanent concession stand.
Then, in stepped the Husky Athletic Booster Club with a genuine desire to fix the situation – permanently. Gontram Architecture donated its services and Ten Penny Construction provided construction services at a (very) discounted rate. The Town of Wake Forest contributed funds to the project as it uses the fields through its Parks & Recreation Department. The Booster Club raised the rest!
In the end, a concession stand and scorer’s booth were built at both fields. Two restrooms were constructed at the softball field (used more and is closer to the sanitary sewer service) which can be utilized by all participants and spectators.
This collaborative effort (made up mostly of volunteers) helped greatly upgrade the facilities at Heritage High School!
